What’s the coolest job in the world? Zookeeping has to be up there!

If you talk to zookeepers you’ll soon find out they grew up with a love of animals and the environment, and this translated into dedicating their lives to wildlife conservation science for the betterment of animals, nature and people!

Our zookeepers have years of training and experience in animal husbandry and behaviour, and use their skills at the Zoo and in the field to care for wildlife.

On a given day an Auckland Zoo keeper could be engaging giraffes in positive reinforcement health care training, analysing a faecal sample to understand an animal’s diet, heading to a sanctuary island to health check New Zealand native birds like takahe and kakapo, creating the right climactic conditions for rare native lizards, developing an enrichment plan for Sumatran tigers…the list goes on.
